Trochanteric bursitis

Trochanteric bursitis is common. Pain is felt because there is inflammation over the bony part of the hip joint. This bony area, like all prominent bony areas in the body (elbow, shoulder, heels ..) has fluid filled sacs or bursae that allow tendons and muscles to glide over them. Beware: in many cases the cause of the pain is an inflamed tendon of gluteus medius that inserts into the bony prominence of the hip joint.
