Avascular necrosis of the femoral head (also osteonecrosis)

This occurs when blood flow to the hipbone is restricted. The bone dies, leaving behind its lattice structure. It usually rejuvenates but until this has happened the bone is at risk of collapsing. The cause is unknown in most cases.
